Dementia is a syndrome involving progressive decline in cognitive functions such as memory, reasoning, language, orientation, and judgment. Memory impairment is one of its most characteristic manifestations. Jerking of the hands and paralysis may occur in particular neurological diseases but are not defining features of dementia. Lethargy is nonspecific.
