A generic foul is not automatically a sending-off offence. Many ordinary fouls result only in a free kick or perhaps a caution. Serious aggressive or violent conduct and biting can lead directly to dismissal, while certain deliberate handballs can also result in sending off when they deny an obvious goal or goal-scoring opportunity.
