Ethylene is a natural gaseous plant hormone that promotes fruit ripening. It stimulates processes such as softening, colour change and conversion of stored starches into sugars. Commercial ripening chambers therefore use controlled ethylene treatment. Acetylene may imitate some effects but is not the normal plant ripening hormone.
