Companion cells occur in the phloem and are intimately associated with sieve-tube elements. Mature sieve-tube elements lose their nuclei, so companion cells perform many metabolic functions on their behalf and communicate with them through plasmodesmata. Vessel elements belong to xylem, while trichomes and guard cells are epidermal structures.
