In the classification generally used by this sociology syllabus, six major theories of the origin of caste are discussed: traditional, racial, political, occupational, religious and evolutionary theories. Textbooks differ somewhat in how they combine or subdivide these explanations, so other counts can occasionally be found, but six is the intended answer here.
