NaCl is an ionic solid. In its crystal lattice, positively charged Na^+ and negatively charged Cl^- ions are held together by strong electrostatic attraction. Considerable energy is needed to overcome these forces, producing a high melting point. Hydrogen bonding and van der Waals forces are much weaker.
